The very sad news reached these shores last night. English music has lost another great supporter - it has not been a good few months.
It leaves the cupboard at Chandos very bare for future recordings of British music, and for those such as myself, who have revelled in the CDs of Handley and Hickox of such composers as Rubbra, Bax, Howells, VW, Dyson and others, we wonder who might pick up the baton.
Out here in the Antipodes, Opera Australia (RH was chief conductor) will be in total disarray, and on a personal (and probably selfish) note, RH's planned Sydney Symphony all-Vaughan Williams concert next October is similarly in doubt. I am expecting a letter in the next few months advising that the concert programme will be changed to accommodate the replacement conductor, and that no VW pieces will be included.
